I’m a very fair coach but People don’t like hearing the truth – a comp preparation coaches job can be very difficult even before a weight has been lifted. Clients need to understand that they need to be assessed physically and mentally before going into comp preparation. You must be eating a significant amount of food for your body type and NOT overtraining and putting undue stress on your body and training as if it’s just your lifestyle. This will help the process down the track well into your comp prep.
I am the coach who will tell you if you are capable or not of competing – unfortunately some times people aren’t ready and when I say that I mean that. I may not think you have enough time to diet in to a specific competition – I don’t wish to put myself under that much pressure as a coach and your body more importantly under that amount of stress in the limited time frame. I have your best interest at heart. Just remember there are always coaches out there willing to take your money – sorry I’m definitely not one of those.
Basically no one has a smooth preparation into competition however when you follow ( and you MUST follow ) my guidance , everything I ask you to do has a reason – you don’t need to know why but of course you can ask. Everything I ask you to do is for your benefit and to make your prep as smooth as possible putting less pressure on both parties. EVERYTHING is done for a reason and you have to be 100% honest with me as your coach. I need to know if something wasn’t completed or you ate more than prescribed – as this will effect results and or results down the track closer to stage date.
Saying all this – competition preparation is challenging but very rewarding and just about every client that steps on stage WANTS MORE.
Choosing the right competition coach
Competition preparation is tough, I’m not going to lie. Heavyweights, high-intensity training sessions, long days, calorie deficit nutrition plans and much much more. If it was easy everyone would do it. However, choosing a good coach for yourself will make your journey easier.
A good coach will be personal in all aspects, ask the tough questions, and sometimes ask questions you don’t want to be asked and most importantly, tell you answers you don’t want to hear. There are so many coaches out there these days, just check Instagram and Facebook and you’ll see every second person is a PT or comp prep coach so choosing the right one for you is important.
The first question I get asked 90% of the time is, how much is competition preparation? Shouldn’t you be asking the following questions first –
- What experience do you personally have in the fitness industry?
- What experience do you have in fitness modelling yourself?
- What certifications do you hold?
- Are you nutritionally certified?
- Have you had any clients compete before?
- Are your nutrition plans personally tailored to my needs and not one fits all?
- Do you provide training plans?
- Are pinch tests for body composition available each week to track progress?
- Is posing apart of your training?
- How many PT sessions do I get included in the overall package price?
- Can you guide me the entire journey from today to stage day?
- Can you provide information where to obtain hair, tan, makeup, bikini and heels for comp?
- How many other clients do you have for the season I’m choosing?
As you can see the list above could be endless (Mpsfitness provide ALL of the services above or have previous experience in all areas).
It Is very important competition preparation is taken seriously – being on a calorie deficit isn’t the best for your body however it’s a must to look your best on stage. Find a coach that will bring your body composition down slowly and back out the same way. Dieting out of competition is just as important as dieting into a comp. Why hormonal profiles must be protected as best they can from any arising issues caused by a food deficit during the preparation time and post competition. Basically, the body must be bought back to normality after a stressful event. The right macro and micro nutrition levels and correct supplementation will prevent this from occurring rather than just simply under eating.
Your last question should be – PRICE $$$
For a few extra dollars (if that’s even the case) don’t go for the cheaper option just because of price point, ask all the questions above and see who is the best option for you to bring and solid package to stage. Be smart about your questions and seek deeper answers. Some coaches have previous experience in the industry of bodybuilding and may have won numerous titles, however, some classes only have one competitor therefore they win their class. They are not telling you the whole story to begin with, do you want someone like that to coach you.
A coach that measures everything is a coach that you will probably have more success with because let’s face it, you’re only guessing otherwise. Measure – food, weights, cardio, body composition, sleep, rest between sets, pretty much everything that can be measured.
I hope you found this content interesting and helpful to find the perfect coach for you.
